The Chernobyl Saviour icon portrays living and deceased Chernobylians with God, the Almighty Judge and Saviour. God saves souls – Chernobylians, rescuers, saved the world and life granted by the Lord. The people depicted in the icon are actually God’s human army. No icon has ever portrayed people with God. By shedding their own blood and not the blood of others, Chernobylians fulfilled God’s Commandment “thou shalt not kill” and were thereby granted this grace.
The icon was blessed in the Kyiv Pecherska Lavra by His Beatitude Volodymyr on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in 28 August 2003. At the moment of its blessing, a miraculous occurrence took place. A dove flew over the icon and high in the sky, with no rain in sight, a rainbow appeared in the form of a nimbus. Then three crosses appeared, resplendent in the centre of the nimbus. This was witnessed by thousands of people.
The icon was the inspiration of the All-Ukrainian Community Organisation “Chernobyl Union of Ukraine” and the socio-ecological party “Chernobyl Union. Ukraine.”.
На Чорнобильському Спасі зображені чорнобильці – живі й мертві, зображені з Богом, Суддею й Спасом. Бог рятує душі, чорнобильці – рятувальники врятували землю й життя, дарована Господом. Фактично зображені на іконі люди – це Божа людська рать. До цього ніколи людину з Богом на іконах ніколи не зображували. Лише тому, що чорнобильці заповідь Божу «не убий» виконали, чужої крові не пролили, а своєї не пошкодували, їм попала така честь.
28 серпня 2003 року в Києво-Печерській Лаврі в день Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці ікону освятив Блаженніший Володимир. У мить її освячення на небі сталися чудотворні явища. Зокрема над іконою пролетів голуб, а високо (на) небі без усякого дощу виникла веселка у формі німбу. А потім з’явилося зображення 3-х хрестів у середині німбу в сонячному сяйві. Свідками тому були тисячі людей.
Ініціятива написання ікони належить Всеукраїнській громадській організації «Союз Чорнобиль України», та соціяльно-екологічній партії «Союз Чорнобиль. України».
